The balance of bacteria in your body is as unique as your fingerprint. When it comes to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), what works for most people might actually make things worse for you.

Why Probiotics Can Backfire in SIBO

Probiotics are often marketed and perceived as gut superheroes, helping to restore balance by introducing beneficial bacteria into your system. These live bacteria and yeasts can be found in many different types of supplements and foods, like yogurt and kefir, and have been claimed to improve digestion, immune function, and overall health. But for people living with SIBO, probiotics often do more harm than good.

SIBO occurs when there's an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. This excess bacteria produces gas, which can get trapped in your small intestine, a space that's not designed to handle it. The result? A slew of potential digestive and non-digestive issues, including bloating and distention, abdominal pain, diarrhea, malnutrition, and more.

When you add more bacteria into your body via probiotics, you’re essentially throwing more fuel on the fire, which can make these symptoms even worse. Since every probiotic is different, with its own unique strains and effects on your gut, taking the wrong one – or the wrong dose – could amplify the very issues you're trying to fix.

Take a Targeted Approach

If you suspect or know you have SIBO, it’s essential to proceed with caution when it comes to probiotics. Working with a trusted health care provider who understands the nuances of SIBO is the key to finding the personalized solutions that will truly support your gut health.
